Microsoft CRM 1.2 Mobile (CRM Sales for Pocket PC)

On August 2nd, 2004 Microsoft released Microsoft CRM Mobile 1.2. Microsoft CRM Mobile provides salespeople with up-to-date information about their accounts and contacts, and helps them manage sales opportunities and track sales-related activities.

Microsoft CRM Mobile components are installed on each mobile device and on the computer running Microsoft CRM Server in the corporate network:
  • Microsoft CRM Mobile. Runs on the mobile device. Users can view and enter data related to relevant accounts, contacts, opportunities, and activities when the mobile device is disconnected. When corporate network access is available, data on the mobile device can be synchronized with data in Microsoft CRM. Users choose the subset of data that applies to them so that only relevant data is downloaded to the device.
  • Microsoft CRM Mobile server components. These components synchronize data between mobile devices and the Microsoft CRM server. Two tools are included for system administrators:

  • Mobile Deployment Manager is used to create deployment packages. Deployment packages are used to install and configure Microsoft CRM Mobile on mobile devices, and can also be used to configure other device settings.

  • CRM Mobile Customization is used to customize which Microsoft CRM data will be available to mobile users and to customize the look of forms and views on the device.
For very detailed instructions on how to deploy and configure Microsoft CRM Mobile, download the Microsoft CRM Mobile Implementation Guide (95 pages - PDF).

    Typical Usage
Typically, mobile device users will use Microsoft CRM Mobile both at the office and while they are traveling, for example:
  • At the field or corporate office, with the mobile device cradled, a salesperson prepares for a day or week of meetings with customers by subscribing to information that is pertinent to upcoming meetings.
  • Before leaving the office, a salesperson synchronizes the mobile device with Microsoft CRM.
  • While traveling, a salesperson updates information related to customers and opportunities, and notes required follow-up activities.
  • While traveling with a Pocket PC Phone Edition device, a salesperson calls a contact by tapping and holding a phone number.
  • Back at the office, or anywhere the salesperson has access to a computer with virtual private network (VPN) access to the corporate network and a Microsoft ActiveSync connection with the device, the salesperson synchronizes the mobile device with Microsoft CRM, and uses Microsoft CRM on the desktop or laptop to complete any follow-up activities.
